Design Statement

When beginning this project I was not 100% sure as to what direction I wanted to go in for the location. There are many places that I wanted to travel in the world that I have yet to be able to but I wanted this project to capture something that was fictional and idealistic. So I started to think about a fictional place that I would love to go based upon my personal interests and values. My fictional place that I chose to create this destination website for is a futuristic sustainable community. Given that I wanted to capture the feeling of Afro-futurism and environmentalism within my idealistic community, I wanted to utilize the colors green and blue and also fonts that I felt were both clean and engaging. The images I chose artwork from a Nigerian architect and artist Olalekan B. Jeyifous that is Brooklyn based whose work reimagine social spaces that examine the relationships between architecture community and the environment. He has exhibited at venues such as the studio museum in Harlem the MOMA, the Vitra design museum and many others. I fell in love with this artist work as soon as I saw it because I thought that it directly captured what I was trying to convey for this midterm assignment.

I wanted this website to be focused on the images and for the text to only accompany it. I truly wanted to highlight the artwork done by this artist and let the visuals speak for themselves with this webpage. The font families that I chose were Tiempos and Bebas Neue, a serif and sans serif font that I believe compliment each other very well. These fonts are not hard on the eyes and I feel like they go very well with the futuristic and clean design of the images. The placement of the elements on each page was based upon my own personal choices based on my design thinking and what I believed the be best aesthetically. I also used other websites as references four styles of the hero image and text/content placement. The button styles are just basic buttons using HTML code and I chose a color palette using the references that the professor provided.
